Everyone is looking for the next big thing in the market as the larger crypto market relatively cools down. In a recent interview with The Coin Republic (TCR), Outlier Ventures’ Head of Research, Jasper De Maere, spoke about some of the key sectors of growth that Outlier has established.

Outlier Ventures Betting on These Sectors
Jasper worked with Morgan Stanley for over half a decade and then made a move to the web3 space as the research lead of Outlier Ventures (OV). At the helm of research and development for OV, Jasper spoke about 8 pockets or sectors that have massive potential for growth in this year and in the coming years.
When De Maere was asked about why Outlier Ventures is focusing on real world assets (RWAs), Decentralized finance (DeFi), web3 among other sectors, he said,
“We identified 8 pockets where we think the next cycle is going to revolve around. Every cycle is very narrative-driven in crypto like we saw this in 2016, we saw this in 2021 when it was all about DeFi and NFTs. We believe these 8 in our call for builders are very much like going to be the center point of the next cycle”
Jasper spoke about how OV takes a different approach with founders that they onboard via the accelerator programs. Just last week, Outlier Ventures announced the launch of their new DePIN Base Camp accelerator program in partnership with Peaq where they have selected six teams. These companies are set to receive investment from Borderless Capital as well.
According to Jasper OV is betting big on RWAs, decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePINS), AI and crypto, socialFi, memecoins, open finance, privacy-enhancing technologies, and the BTC ecosystem.
Jasper added that they are seeing the big players like BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, tokenizing T-bills. T-bills, which are normally stored on central databases, are put on the blockchain.
Intersection of AI and Crypto
Laying stress on the importance of the intersection of AI and crypto, Jasper said that the same is around the governance and democratization of access to these AI models as these are super powerful.
He added that while these intersectional projects could be centrally managed, but by underpinning them with cryptocurrency or blockchain-based systems, theoretically, it’s possible to limit the accessibility or the centralization or power of these models. That’s more long term, that’s like the next decade out.
Some of the other sectors to keep a close eye on are SocialFi and memecoins which have garnered a lot of attention lately. Open finance is this idea where neo-banks are moving into a new paradigm where everything is very modular in nature and it’s no longer centrally controlled.
Lastly, OV would also focus on the Bitcoin ecosystem which they see massive potential in.
Lastly, they would lay stress on privacy-enhancing technologies where the idea is to unlock blockchain’s true potential by enhancing security and privacy.
Outlier Ventures Success Stories
Jasper mentioned how OV takes interest even in early stage projects. He went on to say that they have the most impact on companies when they are in the ideation phase, or have a PoC (proof of concept).
When asked what the top success stories are, he said,
“If I look back even before my time, like the earlier stage companies which have matured significantly into the cycle, the most obvious ones I think we have are Fetch.ai and Ocean Protocol. These are now merging together alongside Singularity into the Artificial Super Intelligence Alliance.” he said.
He emphasized that these companies focused on the intersection between AI and crypto.
At the moment Outlier Ventures have a strong portfolio of around 300 companies that they closely work with.
